St Cuthbert's Way is a 62-mile (100 km) walk through attractive and highly varied countryside between the lovely Scottish Borders town of Melrose and ending at the breathtaking Lindisfarne (Holy Island) off the coast of Northumberland in England, taking in many historic sights on route. You will find yourself travelling from village to village by the same means as St Cuthbert, on foot. A pilgrimage path links places where St Cuthbert started and finished his ministry in the 7th century. The way covers a variety of terrain including winding its way over the Eildon Hills, following the banks of the river Tweed, and then climbing over the rolling foothills of the Cheviots before finally crossing over the Scottish/English border into Northumberland National Park. The way is easy except for a remote upland stretch between Kirk Yetholm and Wooler. You pass through some of the best-kept secret areas of the Border country. For those with an interest in history and culture together with a love of the countryside the walk is an uplifting and stimulating experience. Grade: Easy/Moderate
